The third game in the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, brings the trilogy to a close. Of the three games, is Shadow of the Tomb Raider the best one?
There’s been a lot of anticipation for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. For one, we’re going to witness the conclusion to the modern Lara Craft arc that started with the 2013 reboot.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is also interesting because unlike the first two entries in the reinvented series, developer Crystal Dynamics has handed over the reigns to Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal. Though Crystal Dynamics is still involved, it’s clear from pre-release coverage that Shadow is a bit of a different game.
The game takes place in South America, where Lara is working against the clock to prevent an impending Mayan apocalypse she may have inadvertently set in motion. Expect a big new hub area, plenty of tombs, challenge rooms, and reworked combat and stealth mechanics.
One of the game’s most interesting features is the ability to set the difficulty of each individual component separately. So you can ramp up the challenge in combat, but make puzzles easier, or turn off all the white lines showing where to jump for more interesting exploration.
On Xbox One X, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will offer two graphical modes, one targets 60fps, and another locks it to 30fps and pushes the graphical fidelity. On PC, the game supports ray tracing with Nvidia’s RTX series.
We’ve been playing the game over the past couple of weeks. In our review, Kirk found the game a bit uneven, with some frustrating portions and a few brilliant moments.
